The Scottish Rite Care preschool classroom has 10 male preschool students that
are relatively similar in their levels of speech and language ability. As the
school year progresses additional children are identified through speech and
language evaluations at the Roy Eblen Speech and Hearing clinic.
The classroom incorporates a daily routine including circle time, snack, bath rooming,
craft time, shared book reading, and journal time, in addition to a variety of other
related large and small group activities that compliment a weekly classroom theme
and target preliteracy and language concepts. For each child, a semester program
plan is written including target goals that are specific to each student’s speech,
language and communication needs and level of functioning. Measurement data is
taken each week for each of the individual goals. Semester pre and post language
samples will be taken from each preschooler to assess growth in expressive language skills.
In addition to the in-class activities, various field trips and visitations will be
made to different on-campus and off-campus sites, including the UNI little school house,
UNI greenhouse, Morris apple orchard, and Holmes swimming pool.
The preschool is enjoying a recently renovated classroom space with new sink and cupboards,
as well as a child-sized bathroom located directly outside of the classroom, all made
possible through a Scottish Rite capital improvement grant received in 2007. Thank You!
